When you think of “breast surgery”, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Most people’s answer would probably be breast augmentation, as this is the most popular cosmetic breast procedure performed today. However, breast lift surgery is also a popular procedure, and may be effective in lifting sagging or lax breasts for a more youthful and feminine breast contour.

Many women may choose to undergo breast lift surgery due to the effects of aging, childbirth, breastfeeding, and weight loss, all of which can take a toll on the look and feel of the breasts.

How Does a Breast Lift Work?

If you are interested in breast lift surgery, it is important to first understand what this procedure entails. This procedure is designed to raise the breasts to a more youthful position through tightening of skin and repositioning of the breast tissue and nipple. In some cases, a woman may also choose to combine a breast lift with an augmentation to restore lost breast volume as well.

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. During the procedure, Dr. Power will create incisions to remove excess skin, lift and reposition breast tissue and the nipple-areola complex, and close the incisions to achieve a firmer, more lifted breast contour.  In most cases areolar diameter is also reduced to achieve a proportionate and natural-looking result.

The type of incisions that are required during a breast lift procedure may vary depending on the severity of breast laxity, whether or not breast implants are present, and other factors. Common breast lift incision patterns include:

  • Donut Incision: Women with mild to moderate sagging may benefit from a donut incision, which is created around the border of the areola.
  • Lollipop Incision: This incision is created around the areola and vertically to the crease below the breast. Women who desire some reshaping while also correcting breast sagginess may benefit from this incision.
  • Anchor Incision: For women with significant sagging, an anchor lift may be required. These incisions are created around the areola, vertically to the breast crease, and then horizontally along the crease under the breast.

What to Expect during Breast Lift Recovery

Following breast lift surgery there will be some downtime required to recover. The overall length of the recovery process will ultimately depend upon the surgical approach and personal factors such as type of employment (e.g. office-based vs. more physically strenuous positions) and overall health.  Most women are able to return to light activities within a few days, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4-6 weeks post-operatively. To make your breast lift recovery processes smoother, follow these aftercare tips:

  • Follow Dr. Power’s post-operative instructions closely to lower risk of developing healing complications.  Be sure to shower daily, gently washing your chest with soap and water and then reapply your surgical bra full-time, even when sleeping, over the first 6 weeks post-operatively.  It is also recommended to sleep on your back using 2-3 pillows over the first few weeks.
  • Attend all of your scheduled follow-up appointments. These appointments will allow Dr. Power to monitor your healing progress and give personalized recommendations based on your recovery.
  • Rest following surgery is an important part of the healing process. Giving your body time to rest, heal, and recover is crucial.
  • Nourish your body with healthy foods during your healing process and stay hydrated by consuming plenty of water.
  • Don’t overdo it! Although you will start to feel better, be careful to ask for assistance as needed over the first few weeks around your home and relating to childcare.
  • Allow your body ample time to heal and recover, which means that you should not rush returning to regular activities. Pushing yourself too quickly can compromise results.

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon is a must when choosing to undergo plastic surgery.  Having achieved board certification in Plastic Surgery (FRCSC), Dr. Power is dedicated to providing each of her patients with natural-looking, beautiful results.
