LABIAPLASTY AT POWER PLASTIC SURGERY

Patients may have concerns regarding the size or symmetry of their labia. As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Power appreciates the sensitive nature of these complaints and strives to make patients comfortable throughout their care, from initial consultation through surgery and post-operative management.

Labiaplasty (labial reduction) may be performed for either overall size reduction or limited to one side to improve symmetry depending on each patient’s specific concerns and presentation. Incisions are placed along natural labial contours, and scars are fairly inconspicuous once fully healed.

"One woman described feeling more confident even walking down the sidewalk after labiaplasty. More comfortable and confident, even when fully clothed. Her little secret."

Labiaplasty Recovery Timeline

A typical recovery with Dr. Power. You will receive detailed written instructions on wound care, showering and activity.

  1. Day of the procedureLabiaplasty is most commonly done while you are awake under local anesthetic, in a private minor procedure room, and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. General anesthesia is an option if you do not wish to proceed under local anesthetic. You go home the same day.
  2. First 3 daysCold compresses are very important to reduce swelling, bruising and discomfort. Most patients need prescription pain medication for a day or two.
  3. Within a few daysMost patients return to school or office-based work within a few days.
  4. About 10 daysYour follow-up visit. Dissolvable stitches are used, and any that have not dissolved are gently removed.
  5. 2 to 3 weeksBaths and swimming can usually resume once the incisions are well healed.
  6. 1 monthExercise and strenuous activity can usually resume once Dr. Power confirms your incisions are healing well.
  7. 4 to 6 weeksMost swelling has resolved. Tampon use can usually resume once Dr. Power confirms you are healed.
  8. 6 weeksSexual activity can usually resume once Dr. Power confirms you are healed.
  9. Following monthsAny subtle remaining swelling settles and scars fade.

Labiaplasty surgery is most commonly performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthetic in a minor procedure room. This ensures maximum patient privacy and comfort. General anesthesia is an option if you do not wish to proceed under local anesthetic. Resorbable sutures are used and patients are generally able to return to work within a few days. Dr. Power will discuss further activity restrictions following the procedure.

Here are a few common questions regarding Labiaplasty:

What are the common concerns of patients considering labiaplasty?

  • There is typically a wide age range of patients who consider undergoing labiaplasty.
  • Younger patients (late adolescence and beyond) often express concerns about how the shape of the labia minora (inner labia) has developed following puberty.
  • They are often self-conscious about their development and may experience discomfort when wearing tight-fitting clothing or during sexual activity due to the size of the labia.
  • Prominent edges of the labia minora may also lead to irritation when performing certain exercises, e.g. bicycling or spinning classes.
  • Following pregnancy or during the normal aging process, the appearance of your labia minora may be elongated as tissue elasticity decreases and laxity develops.

Who is a suitable candidate for labiaplasty?

  • Patients with well-defined concerns about their anatomy with reasonable goals are often good candidates for labiaplasty.
  • A complete medical history and examination will be performed during the consultation to ensure that there are no contraindications to surgery or any conditions that may need optimization before elective surgery is performed.
  • Smoking cessation at least 4 weeks before and after surgery has been shown to lower the risk of complications, particularly relating to infection and delayed wound healing.
  • It is also important for patients to understand and comply with post-operative wound care instructions and recommended activity modifications until well-healed to lower the risk of complications– labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that should be treated with care.

How is a labiaplasty typically performed?

  • The two most common types of labiaplasty are the trim vs. wedge techniques.
  • Both techniques are effective in reducing labia minora projection.
  • The technique of labiaplasty recommended for you will be based on your specific concerns and clinical presentation and will be discussed in detail during consultation.

What are the different types of labiaplasty?

Trim Labiaplasty

  • During a trim labiaplasty procedure, the excess length of the labia minora which projects beyond the labia majora (outer labia) is resected.
  • This technique also removes any darkened tissue which is of concern to some patients and may be present at the leading edge.
  • Trim labiaplasty results in decreased projection of the labia minora and restoration of pink healthy tissue at the leading edge margin.
  • This technique places a scar along the length of the labia minora and the labia majora, which is often subtle in appearance once healed and scar maturation has been completed.

Wedge Labiaplasty

During this technique, a V-shaped wedge of labia minora is resected to reduce its size and contour shape at the same time. The wedge labiaplasty technique does not resect the darkened margin of tissue, but the scar may be even less apparent once healed.

What are the risks of labiaplasty?

There is also the risk of sensitive scar formation or altered sensation. As with any cosmetic procedure performed bilaterally (on both sides of the body), there is a risk of asymmetry post-operatively. The labia minora are often asymmetric pre-operatively, which will be assessed during your initial consultation. Additional aesthetic complications include overcorrection, under-correction, dissatisfaction with cosmetic results, and the potential need for revision surgery.

Labiaplasty is generally a well-tolerated procedure. The majority of patients report improved self-image post-operatively, which may lead to enhanced sexual experience and self-confidence.

Dr. Power has an all-female team in her office.  This may be important to some patients considering labiaplasty.  We strive to make patients comfortable during every stage, from initial consultation through operative procedures and follow-up visits.

Labiaplasty FAQs

Does labiaplasty leave scars?

Labiaplasty leaves scars. They are typically fairly inconspicuous once healed given that mucosal tissue heals quite well with little tension and an excellent blood supply. If risk factors for greater scarring are identified during your consultation, this will be discussed in detail before undergoing labiaplasty.

What should I expect on the day of labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is performed in a minor procedure room.

On the day of surgery, a topical anesthetic cream will first be applied to the region to reduce discomfort associated with the local anesthetic (freezing) infiltration.

Pre-operative photographs will be taken with consent as part of your medical record and surgical markings performed.

The local anesthetic will then be injected through a series of small needles where the topical anesthetic cream had been applied.

After relaxing for approximately 10-15 minutes as the local anesthetic takes effect, the area will then be tested to ensure well anaesthetized.

During surgery you may experience a mild pressure or pulling sensation periodically, but there should be no associated pain.

The surgery itself generally takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, and less if only one side is being reduced.

Resorbable (dissolvable) sutures are used for wound closure.

Following surgery, a dressing will be placed and you will be discharged home

When may I resume normal activity after labiaplasty?

Most patients are able to return to school or work within a few days of surgery.

Follow up is scheduled approximately ten days post-operatively.

Any sutures which have not resorbed by this point will be gently removed.

I recommend refraining from exercise for one month and from sexual activity for six weeks post-operatively, until medically cleared based on incision healing.

I also advise against taking baths or swimming until the incisions are well-healed, generally 2-3 weeks following labiaplasty

What are potential complications of labiaplasty?

Bleeding

Potential for hematoma formation (collection of blood or ongoing bleeding within the tissues).

Infection

Delayed wound healing

Wound dehiscence (wound separation)

There is also risk of sensitive scar formation or altered sensation. As with any cosmetic procedure performed bilaterally (on both sides of the body), there is risk of asymmetry post-operatively. In fact, the labia minora are often asymmetric pre-operatively, which will be assessed during your initial consultation. Additional aesthetic complications include overcorrection, undercorrection, dissatisfaction with cosmetic result, and potential need for revision surgery.

Does labiaplasty affect sensation?

Labiaplasty removes excess tissue from the outer edge of the labia minora, away from the clitoris, and most patients notice no lasting change in sensation. As with any surgery, altered or reduced sensation is a possible risk. Dr. Power will review this with you at your consultation.

What is vaginal rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation may include both surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance vaginal appearance and function. It may be performed to address cosmetic or health concerns, including urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, and reduced tone.

Why would you get a labiaplasty?

You would get a labiaplasty if you have concerns about the appearance of your labia minora (inner labia) or if you have any associated discomfort. You might be concerned about asymmetry or length if it projects beyond the outer labia. You might also consider labiaplasty if you experience irritation during sexual activity or when sitting, biking, or wearing tight clothing.

What should I expect following labiaplasty?

The local anesthetic generally wears off within a few hours after surgery.

Most patients require prescription pain medication for a day or two post-operatively.

This prescription will be faxed to your local pharmacy to pick up in advance. You will receive detailed post-op instructions about showering, wound care, and activity restrictions. Cold compresses are very important over the first 3 days to reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort.

They should be applied continually while you are awake. When the cold compress warms up to room temperature, start over with a new one. Be sure to ice over a pantyliner, underwear, and thin leggings to avoid direct contact with skin, which lowers risk of a frostbite injury.

You should begin showering daily starting the day after surgery, gently washing your incisions with soap and water.

Following your shower, gently pat dry and then apply Vaseline and a new pantyliner. Vaseline should be reapplied throughout the day after you go to the washroom. A small amount of bleeding is to be expected following any surgery, particularly in this area, given the effects of gravity when you are standing, sitting, and walking.

What are the side effects of labiaplasty?

After labiaplasty, it is common to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising. These side effects generally resolve over the first couple of weeks. Most patients require prescription pain medication for 1-2 days post-operatively. You may also feel uncomfortable sitting and standing during early healing.

How long is recovery after labiaplasty?

If your job is office-based and not physically strenuous, you can expect to return to your regular schedule within a few days of surgery. If your job is physically active, be sure to discuss with Dr. Power to determine when you may safely return to work.

What is labial rejuvenation?

Labial rejuvenation refers to surgery on the external labia rather than the vaginal canal. At Power Plastic Surgery this means labia minora reduction (labiaplasty), which may be combined with clitoral hood reduction.

What is the purpose of a labiaplasty?

The purpose of a labiaplasty is to reduce the length of the labia minora (inner labia) and in many cases to improve symmetry. It may reduce discomfort associated with excess labial tissue, for example, when biking, during sexual activity, or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. Many women express increased self-confidence and sexual satisfaction as well following labiaplasty.

Can you be awake during labiaplasty?

Yes, labiaplasty is most commonly performed while you are awake under local anesthetic. Applying a topical anesthetic cream approximately an hour before surgery may reduce discomfort associated with the local anesthetic. You will remain awake and comfortable during the procedure. General anesthesia is an option if you do not wish to proceed under local anesthetic.

How long does a labiaplasty procedure take?

On average, a labiaplasty procedure takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to perform. Surgery will be shorter if only one side requires reduction.

Is labiaplasty covered by insurance?

In most cases, labiaplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by OHIP or private insurance plans in Ontario. However, in rare situations where there is significant physical discomfort or functional impairment, coverage may be considered. We recommend discussing your symptoms during your consultation to determine if a medical case can be made.

Does labiaplasty affect childbirth?

Labiaplasty does not typically interfere with your ability to have a vaginal delivery in the future. That said, if you are planning to become pregnant shortly after your procedure, you may be advised to wait, as the physical changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth can potentially affect your results. We can guide you based on your personal goals and timing.

How soon after labiaplasty can I use tampons?

Patients are typically advised to avoid using tampons for at least 4 to 6 weeks after labiaplasty or until your surgeon confirms that healing is complete. Using tampons too soon can increase the risk of irritation or infection. During this time, sanitary pads are recommended if you have your period.

Can labiaplasty improve comfort during exercise or physical activities?

Yes. Many patients seek labiaplasty due to discomfort during activities such as running, biking, yoga, or wearing tight clothing. Reducing excess labial tissue can minimize rubbing, pinching, or pulling sensations, leading to increased comfort and improved confidence during physical activities.

How painful is labiaplasty recovery?

Most patients describe labiaplasty recovery as involving mild to moderate discomfort rather than severe pain. Swelling and sensitivity are common during the first week, but medication and cold compresses may help manage symptoms. Many individuals return to light activities within a few days.

Where are labiaplasty surgical stitches located?

Stitches are typically placed along the natural folds and edges of the labia to follow the body’s contours. This placement helps the sutures blend discreetly while the area heals. Dissolvable stitches are used, so most do not need to be removed. Any that have not dissolved by your follow-up visit are gently removed.

How can I minimize scarring after labiaplasty?

Because the labia have excellent blood supply and heal well, scarring is often minimal. Following postoperative instructions, keeping the area clean, and avoiding activities that put stress on the tissues may support smoother healing. Over time, most scars fade and become difficult to notice.

Are emotional or psychological changes common after labiaplasty recovery?

It is natural for patients to experience a mix of emotions during recovery, ranging from relief to self-consciousness as swelling subsides. Many women report improved confidence and comfort once healing is complete. Open communication with Dr. Power and the care team can help address concerns throughout the process.

Are labiaplasty results natural and discreet?

Labiaplasty is designed to refine and balance the natural appearance of the labia while maintaining function and sensitivity. Results typically look discreet and harmonious with surrounding anatomy. Over time, swelling subsides and the final outcome appears soft and natural.

How long does swelling typically last after labiaplasty?

Swelling is most noticeable in the first week after surgery and gradually improves over the following weeks. Most of the swelling resolves within 4–6 weeks, though subtle swelling can take several months to fully settle. Dr. Power closely monitors the healing process to ensure everything progresses normally.

When can I safely resume sexual activity after labiaplasty?

Patients are generally advised to wait 6 weeks before resuming sexual activity. This allows the incisions to heal properly and reduces the risk of discomfort or delayed healing.

What are the best practices for labiaplasty incision care?

Incisions should be gently cleansed daily with mild soap and water, which you can begin the day after surgery. Applying a thin layer of ointment helps keep the area moisturized and supports healing. Avoid baths, swimming, and tight clothing until healing is further along.

How should I manage pain and discomfort in the first week post-surgery?

Most patients manage discomfort well with prescribed pain medication and the use of cold compresses in short intervals. Resting, wearing loose clothing, and keeping the area clean also help reduce irritation during the first week. Dr. Power provides detailed aftercare instructions to keep you comfortable throughout early recovery.

Can labiaplasty improve urinary discomfort or hygiene?

Labiaplasty is not a treatment for urinary conditions such as incontinence or infections, which need their own assessment. When excess labial tissue is the cause, some patients find that reducing it improves urinary spray, irritation from chafing, or difficulty keeping the area clean.
