As we age, the brows gradually descend and fine lines and wrinkles develop. The outer brow lowers over time, which may also increase the prominence of loose skin of the upper lids. Wrinkles of the glabellar region, the so-called “11 lines”, also form from repeated contraction of the brow depressors in that area. The use of Botox has been one of the most impressive updates in the beauty industry, especially with its ability to lift the brows. Treatment plans are customized based on each patient’s clinical examination and aesthetic concerns. Between 4-8 units may be used for elevation of the outer brow and generally between 20-30 units or so to treat the glabellar area for a Botox brow lift.
There are several reasons why the brows fall and lose their natural lift as we all age. The main reason is gravity. Contraction of the muscles around the eyebrows also pulls the brows downward, including the glabellar muscles and orbicularis oculi. Repetitive contraction over time gradually leads to brow descent and static wrinkles, in addition to the cumulative effects of sun exposure, loss of skin elasticity, and potentially other risk factors like smoking.
Dr. Power will begin the consultation with a complete assessment of your facial appearance, both at rest and with various facial movements. She will focus on your eyebrow and eyelid regions. One of the most important tests is examination with the eyes closed. If there is loose skin of the upper eyelids, may patients compensate by elevating their eyebrows when their eyes are open. The brows fall to their natural position when the eyes are closed.
Botox works to reduce wrinkles by temporarily weakening the muscles that depress the brow in the area between your eyes and towards the outer brow. It can help achieve subtle results for a natural-looking reduction in wrinkles and brow elevation.
Once a patient has gone through an initial assessment, Dr. Power will determine the amount of Botox to be used for the eyebrow area. The placement of injections and disbursement of the Botox are both very important in order to achieve the best results. For most patients, between 4-8 units is common for the outer brow and 20-30 units on average for the area between the eyebrows. Additional units may be used if there are other areas of your face you want to focus on.
It’s important to remember that the Botox Brow Lift is a temporary measure that may achieve subtle brow elevation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles in these areas. By weakening the muscles that depress the brows, a subtle lift will be seen of the brows within 5-7 days. The treatment effect gradually wears off between 3-6 months on average.
