Many women opt to have breast lift surgery after pregnancies, breastfeeding, or weight loss.  It is customizable to your anatomy and goals and may be an excellent option if you’re looking to lift and restore your breasts after they begin to sag with aging or postpartum changes. During your consultation with Dr. Stephanie Power, you’ll discuss the right type of breast lift for you.  In the meantime, here’s what to know about the breast lift and different incision patterns.

Periareolar Incision

Also called the donut incision, this is a small, circular incision around the areolae. The benefit of this approach is that this incision can easily be placed within the natural pigmentation of the areolae, resulting in very little visible scarring. On the other hand, this limited incision pattern may not be the best option for patients who need more than mild correction.  It can achieve only about 1cm of lift on ptotic breasts, which may make it a more effective option for smaller lift procedures.

Short Vertical Incision

Sometimes called the lollipop incision, this option is an extension of the periareolar incision. It begins with the small circular incision around the areolae and also includes a vertical incision down to the breast crease.  It may be a good option for women who require more of a lift than a periareolar incision alone can address.

Wise Pattern

The Wise pattern was developed by Robert Wise in 1956 and is also referred to as the “anchor incision”. It’s the most extensive incision pattern, as well as one of the oldest and most common.  It involves a lollipop incision with additional horizontal incisions along the inframammary fold underneath each breast. The Wise pattern breast lift is best for significant drooping when a considerable degree of lift is needed.

Which Incision is Best for Me?

The best breast lift incision for you will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Power following clinical examination.  It depends on the degree of lift that is required.  Breast lift surgery also reduces the diameter of the areolae when indicated.  If greater fullness is also desired, it may be combined with breast implants.  If you wish to reduce breast size, breast lift with reduction is another option depending on your goals.
