You work hard to take care of your body, including eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. However, you are still stuck with those few stubborn pockets of fat- what are you to do? Liposuction is a treatment option to eliminate unwanted pockets of fat and contour the body to help meet your body goals! Read on to learn more about this treatment option and how it may benefit you.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure to eliminate excess fat deposits to sculpt and improve the shape of the body. One popular misconception regarding liposuction is that it is a weight loss procedure when it is actually used for contouring and sculpting.

Both men and women may benefit from liposuction to help achieve the body shape and contours they desire. Liposuction may be used on many areas of the body, but is most commonly performed on the abdomen, flanks, and back to address pockets of fatty tissue that do not respond to diet and exercise alone.

What are the Different Types of Liposuction?

There are many different liposuction techniques used by surgeons today.  Each type uses different technology to assist in the process of removing unwanted fat. These various techniques include:

Tumescent Liposuction: An anesthetic “tumescent” solution is injected into the treatment area to minimize discomfort and bleeding during the procedure.  It also helps to break up the fat prior to suctioning.  For small areas, tumescent liposuction may be performed under local anesthetic.

Laser Assisted Liposuction: This technique uses laser energy to help break down fat cells. Popular laser-assisted liposuction brands include SmartLipo and Slimlipo.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: This employs ultrasound energy to break down and loosen fatty tissue.  It may be helpful in areas of fibrous tissue or for revision cases with increased scar tissue. It may be used when performing surgery on a large area to shorten the length of surgery.

Power-Assisted Liposuction:  This technique uses a vibrating cannula powered by a motor to remove fatty tissue.  It is also effective on areas of fibrous tissue or scarring in revision cases.

Who May Benefit from Lipo Contouring?

Healthy individuals who are looking to improve contour and address persistent fatty tissue that remains despite diet and exercise may benefit from liposuction. Good candidates will be at or near their ideal body weight with stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t budge. Liposuction may be used to eliminate this unwanted fat, slimming and reshaping the body.

However, you should understand that liposuction cannot be successfully used to correct loose, sagging skin or to help patients lose a significant amount of weight.
