What is Breast Augmentation?

Implant Type
The two types of breast implants are saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water and are safely resorbed by the body if the implant ruptures. Silicone implants, including modern form-stable options, tend to have a more natural feel and require periodic monitoring for silent rupture.
Implant Size and Placement
Implants are sized by volume rather than bra cup size, and your breast base diameter helps determine the best size for your frame and goals. Implants can be placed either above or below the chest muscle; placement below the muscle is often more natural-looking but involves a longer recovery.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Good candidates for breast augmentation are in good general health, have realistic expectations about results, and are bothered by breast volume, shape, or symmetry. Patients who have finished breastfeeding and have a stable weight tend to have the most predictable, long-lasting results.

Breast Augmentation Recovery
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, so you will need someone to take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Most patients need about one to two weeks of recovery and can return to work or school within about a week. A surgical bra is generally worn for around 6 weeks to support the new implants while swelling and discomfort subside, which is usually most noticeable during the first few days.
