The tummy tuck remains one of the most effective ways to get rid of stubborn fat and lax skin around the middle. Whether the result of massive weight loss, pregnancy, or simply genetics, the tummy tuck can be a great option for rejuvenating your figure and boosting confidence in yourself. If you’re considering your options for a tummy tuck with Dr. Power, then here’s what to know about your recovery and what to expect on your way to a new figure.

Getting Ready

Tummy tuck recovery is different for each patient. The length and ease of your recovery can depend on different factors like your age and weight, how extensive the surgery was, and your general health.  You will arrive for surgery on an empty stomach.  It is important to stop eating and drinking at midnight the night before surgery.  Most patients stay overnight following surgery at our out-of-hospital facility for added safety and are discharged home the following morning.

Another thing to add to your list before surgery is to prepare your home for recovery. This means filling prescriptions before your operation, preparing meals ahead of time, and making sure you have a designated recovery area in your home like your bed or couch. You should have someone around to help with tasks around the house for the first few days, as well as someone to drive you home the following morning. You’ll need to arrange for things like childcare or pet care so that you can rest and avoid straining and lifting.  Resuming housework or exercise too soon could increase risk of developing complications and compromise your outcome.

Follow Instructions

Dr. Power will provide written instructions to follow during your recovery, as well as her after-hours emergency contact information.  It is recommended to resume showering daily beginning the day after surgery.  You will be instructed regarding drain care as well as monitoring for signs of infection.  If your work is office-based and not physically demanding, you will be able to return within a week or so.  Dr. Power will give personalized recommendations if your job responsibilities are more strenuous.  It is important to avoid exercise for one month after tummy tuck surgery and to avoid core exercises until 6 weeks post-op.  The compression garment should be worn full-time, even when sleeping, for 6 weeks as well.  Prescription pain medication is generally required for a few days after surgery.  It is encouraged to wean to extra-strength or plain Tylenol as soon as possible.  Many patients compare the recovery to that following a C-section.
