Rigorous training and exercise will reduce body fat. That should come as no surprise – after all, that is one of the main reasons that many people exercise in the first place! However, when that fat is being lost from the breasts, you might be frustrated to see your breasts change shape and decrease in size.

Fortunately, breast implants can deliver beautiful results for women seeking to increase or regain their breast size. However, the decision to get breast implants for athletic women does require a little extra thought and consideration.

Choosing the size

The cup size that you choose will need to fit with your activities. Some sports will not be affected by breast size at all, and you could choose implants as large as you want. However, playing sports that involve arm movement across your chest like golf or tennis could be affected by larger implants.

Before you make up your mind on the size of your implants, think about the kinds of motions and activities that you do and whether or not larger implants will impede that movement.

Choosing the material

Breast implants can be filled with either saline solution or silicone. Saline implants can be more affordable and require a smaller incision, but they often do not feel as natural. Silicone implants come in different consistencies: they can be more liquid or more cohesive.

Highly cohesive silicone implants have the distinct advantage of never leaking, even if the outer shell is ruptured. If your active lifestyle involves contact sports, this is definitely a material to consider.

Choosing the placement

Breast implants can be placed in a couple different ways. There are sub-glandular implants that rest between the breast tissue and the chest muscles. There are also sub-muscular implants that go underneath the muscles. The best option for your active lifestyle will depend on a few factors like your desired outcome and the size of your pre-existing natural breast

    • Sub-muscular

This option tends to have the most natural-looking results, especially for women whose original breasts were quite small. However, if you do lots of upper-body strength training, they can temporarily change shape each time you flex your chest muscles.

    • Sub-glandular

The healing time is shorter with this style of implant, so you will be able to return to your normal exercise routine sooner. However, they sometimes look less natural, especially if your original breasts were quite small.

There is no single “correct” answer to any of these questions that will apply to 100% of women. Instead, you and your surgeon should discuss your options in order to find the solution that will work best for your body type and lifestyle.
